Small Dog BreedsIndividuals who live in apartments and/or have a limited amount of space would do well to consider getting a dog from one of the many small dog breeds. Small dog breeds are those dogs that weigh twenty pounds and under (on average) and stand ten inches or under at the shoulder.
Small dog breeds due to their diminutive size tend to eat a lot less than medium sized to large dogs and therefore it is necessary for their owners to make sure that the dog is taking in the proper amount of nutrients in his/her daily food intake. Small dog breeds are broken down into four groups, which are the toy, terrier, hound, and working groups. A number of small dog breeds are recognized by the American Kennel Club (abbreviated as the AKC). These breeds include the Havanese, Maletese and the Miniature Pinscher which all belong to the toy group of small dog breeds. Also recognized is the terrier group, which consists of the Manchester Terrier, the Miniature Bull Terrier (or Mini Bull) and the Miniature Schnauzer. Finally the AKC recognizes the Harrier, which belongs to the hound group, and the Mastiff belongs to the working group. Other small dog breeds that are out there include the Affenpinscher, the Brussels Griffon, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Chihuahua, the Chinese Crested, the Dachshund, the English Toy Spaniel, the Italian Greyhound, the Japanese Chin, the Papillon and the Pekingese. The list goes on with the Pomeranian, the Pug, the Shih Tzu, the Scottish Terrier, the Silky Terrier, the Toy Fox Terrier, the Toy Poodle, the Welsh Corgi and finally the Yorkshire Terrier. Interestingly enough some of the small dog breeds were first bred to be loyal companions for humans, in particular the toy group while others had the express purpose of being used for hunting, such as the Italian Greyhound.Individuals who live in apartments and/or have a limited amount of space would do well to consider getting a dog from one of the many small dog breeds. Small dog breeds are those dogs that weigh twenty pounds and under (on average) and stand ten inches or under at the shoulder. Small dog breeds are canines that can adjust much easier to a smaller living area than can big dogs and most are pleasant and easy for their owners to handle and care for. Before setting your heart on a specific kind of dog do your research and keep in mind that not all small dog breeds have the same personality and behavior traits and some are not good with children.
