Pet Tracking

Losing a family pet is a heartbreaking event which leaves you imagining only the worse. Even with all of the efforts a responsible pet owner may take to prevent their dog or cat from being lost, unforeseen circumstances do sometime allow for unfortunate events. Advances in technology has allowed for microchips to be implanted into virtually any animal to track in case it is lost. Amazingly, microchips are injected via needle deep under the skin of pets which emits a radio signal with a unique identification number. This identification number is recorded in a database and updated with the owner's address and contact information. In the event that your lost pet makes its way to an animal shelter, they will automatically check for microchips and record the identification number if one is detected. To read the microchips, a scanner is simply waved over the body of the animal and will read the information contained on a microchip.

The microchips hurt no more or less than a normal injection when being implanted and require no power source. The chips are generally guaranteed for the lifetime of the pet and must be kept updated with the most current owner information. Most puppies and kittens purchased at pet stores contain a microchip which will be activated for a fee. It is then the new pet owner's responsibility to re-register the identification number under their name rather than the breeder or pet store.

Although most commonly found in dogs and cats, the microchip will allow for the tracking of dozens of other animals. Other mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, pigs, deer, goats and sheep can receive the injection and be listed in the database. Unbelievably, even some reptiles and amphibians such as lizards, turtles, alligators and toads have microchips and an identification number. This advance in technology is reuniting many lost pets with their families and has dramatically increased the chances of rescue for our helpless little friends in the time of their greatest need.
