Pet Shop

When going to the pet shop to shop for my dog, I always find it helpful to bring her along with me. Having her there eliminates the need for guesswork if picking up things which need to be fitted such as a jacket or a new collar. In addition, it provides her with intellectual stimulation by experiencing so many new things and a chance for socialization with unfamiliar people and new dogs.

Although most large chain pet stores now allow your animal in with you (providing its leashed), it’s probably still best to call ahead and check this policy before bringing your pet along with you. There are a few tips to follow to make sure you are being a responsible pet owner and it is an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

It seems obvious to make sure your dog has had a chance to relieve herself before bringing her in the store to lessen the chance of a possible accident. However, be sure you give her this chance before you leave your house rather than once you’ve arrived at the store. Many dogs will “go” much easier in spots in which they’ve already gone out of instinct and the comfort level associated with being at home. Your dog may be way too stimulated by all the new sights and smells to relax enough to relieve herself. Furthermore, there may not be a patch of grass or dirt anywhere and many dogs are reluctant to go on pavement. Your dog may become very excited or even skittish upon meeting the other dogs in the store and may have an accident without even realizing it.

Also, once inside the pet store, look to other dog owners for cues regarding how involved your dogs can become. It would stand to reason that most, if not all, dogs brought into the pet store with their owners are friendly and can be trusted not to bite or act viciously. However, if you have a 9 month old terrier that is bursting with excitement, the 11 year old Bassett Hound may feel threatened, nervous or even just annoyed with too much in-your-face attention. Always keep your dog on a tight leash if not carrying them and look to the owners for cues about your dogs interacting with each other. And if you’re dog is an habitual barker and starts up, bring him outside and let others continue their shopping undisturbed.

By following a few simple rules of logic and consideration, bringing your dog to the pet store can be an adventure out rather than just another errand.
