If looking to adopt a pet, there are numerous resources to aid you in your search. Many websites give listings of adoptable pets as well as the needed contact info. Also, some of the large pet stores have information centers devoted solely to matching homeless pets with loving families. However, first check your local animal shelter for the perfect dog or cat to bring into your home. If the selection available at the shelter is not quite what you were looking for, pick up a copy of your local newspaper. Pet classifieds often contain ads taken out by families who are forced to give up their pet but want to first find a safe home. These pets may not be listed in any other directory and knowing the family from which your new pet is coming will fill you in on a lot of their medical history and personality traits.

If however, you would like to purchase a puppy of a specific breed from a breeder, the classified ads usually contain spots detailing litters available at certain breeders. If locating a breeder by responding to a classified ad, be sure to first do your research to make sure the breeder and their facility is reputable.

First, try doing an online search and then inquire with the American Kennel Club or even your local Chamber of Commerce about the credentials of the business and the breeder. If everything seems to check out, first meet with the breeder and view the puppies before committing to anything. A responsible breeder is concerned with the quality of home the puppies are placed into and should not object to your taking some time to decide.
