List Dog Breed

The list of dog breeds is long and many. It is important when considering a list dog breed to take into consideration the fact that the word “breed” can be left up to a multitude of interpretations. For thousands of years the process of selective breeding among dogs has been taking place and it continues today. In some cases inbreeding takes place, whereby dogs are breed from the same bloodline while in other cases dogs from different ancestral bloodlines are mixed.

The list dog breed can be broken down into a variety of categories. Some of these include hunting dogs which consist of hounds such as scent and sight hounds, gundogs including pointers, retrievers and spaniels, terriers and curs; working (or utility) dogs such as herding dogs (an example is the sheepdog) and sled dogs; bulldogs, fighting dogs, toy dogs and finally extinct dog breeds. Some people prefer to list dog breeds in other ways, for example grouping them in specific types such as mastiff types, pit bulls, lurchers and/or spitz types.

The American Kennel Club (abbreviated to AKC) recognizes 158 different breeds of dog. Their list dog breed is broken down in two ways, by individual names of the dogs and secondly, by group. Let’s take a look at both of these, starting with dog names.

The AKC does not recognize in its list of dog breeds any that begin with the letters Q, U, X or Z. List dog breeds are alphabetically broken down like this, there is the category A-B, then C-G, followed by H-R and finally S-Y. Examples of dogs to be found in the A-B category include the Afghan Hound, the Alaskan Malamute, the American Eskimo Dog, the Bichon Frise, the Border Collie, the Boxer and the Bulldog. Moving onto the list dog breeds in the C-G category we have the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the Chow Chow, the Cocker Spaniel, the Dachshund, the Dalmatian, the Doberman Pinscher, the English Foxhound, the English Setter, the Finnish Spitz, the German Shepherd dog, the Giant Schnauzer, the Golden Retriever, the Great Pyrenees and the Greyhound.

Moving along to the next category of list dog breeds is the H-R category which includes such breeds as the Havanese, the Ibizan Hound, the Japanese Chin, the Keeshond, the Lhasa Apso, the Mastiff, the Norwegian Elkhound, the Old English Sheepdog, the Pekingese, the Pointer, the Pomeranian, the Pug, the Rhodesian Ridgeback and the Rottweiler.

Finally the last list dog breed, that of S-Y, includes such dogs as the Saint Bernard, the Samoyed, the Siberian Husky, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Tibetan Terrier, the Vizsla, the Welsh Terrier, the Whippet and the Yorkshire Terrier.

The second way the American Kennel Club lists dog breeds is according to eight different groups. This list dog breed includes the categories Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding and the Miscellaneous Class.
