Dog JewelryWhen you hear the term “dog jewelry” are images of ID tags and flea collars conjured up? Or perhaps the feather boas and tiaras you see dogs dressed in lately? It would be an easy mistake given the latest trend in doggie divas where dogs are more fashionable than a lot of people. However, dog jewelry is very much designed for humans and has a huge market for dog lovers. Featuring dogs and jewels, dog jewelry is a perfect combination of man’s best friend and woman’s best friend. The style and designs in dog accessories are endless and range from charms and brooches which depict all different breeds of dog and sayings such as “I Love my Dog” to bracelets shaped out of tiny little sterling silver dog bones and paw prints. Styles available range from simplistic to ornate and can be found in gold, silver or even platinum. Higher end pieces are diamond or crystal encrusted and sometimes family antiques passed down throughout the generations. Estate sales can be a great place to find antique dog jewelry whether it is authentic or costume. Collecting rare pieces of animal jewelry is a favorite pastime of many and lends some imagination to where each one of the pieces was in the past and to whom it may have belonged. Another trend in jewelry is dog tags, but not in the canine sense. Duplicated from the metal identification tags soldiers have to wear at all times in case of being killed in action; dog tags first became popular in urban wear and then exploded onto the pop culture scene. Dog tags can be personalized or depict one’s favorite sports team or rock star. Although they dominated the beginning of the 1990’s, dog tags seem to be a waning trend, except of course for those in arms. |
