Dog Grooming SuppliesWhile there are usually numerous professional dog groomers in any given area, some dog owners may choose to groom their dog themselves. Whether grooming your dog at home as a cost saver, because you have a very skittish dog or simply because you enjoy spending the time and attention on your pal; there are certain essentials needed to take care of all your dog’s grooming and hygiene needs.
To keep your dog clean, fresh smelling and comfortable; regular baths coupled with weekly brushings are required. When choosing a brush, look for a doubled sided design which provides two surfaces for different purposes. For instance, a soft side for all over brushing may be paired with a harder side to help detangle knots and snares. For bathing your dog, shampoo and a crème rinse are needed to keep the coat shiny and soft and can be purchased in many different varieties including medicated for fleas or mild for sensitive skin. Other dog grooming supplies needed include a toenail clipper, hair trimmers and dental care tools. Trimming your dog’s toenails may be a scary prospect at first but will eventually become like second nature with instinct and s good eye guiding the proper length. Nonetheless, having a good set of toenail clippers with a fresh, smooth blade will help to ensure safety and comfort. If a nail is cut too short, apply some flour to the nail to stop the bleeding and keep an eye on it for a day or so. Hair trimmers for dogs are usually quite similar to those used for humans and come with different attachments to accommodate different lengths and styles. If you would like to cut your dog’s coat in accordance with breed standard, there are books and pamphlets available which detail the various cuts for each breed. Dental hygiene is an important aspect of your dog’s well being and should not be overlooked. If your dog will allow you to brush her teeth you will need a toothbrush and an all natural dog toothpaste which can be found at large pet stores. If this is not an option, there are drops which you may add to your dog’s drinking water which freshen breath and provide some tartar control. Grooming your own dog will be a very rewarding experience but may also require a lot of patience and some trial and error learning when first beginning. |
