Regular grooming for your dog is essential for healthy skin and coat and will have a direct influence on her overall happiness and well being. Regular grooming will also give your dog fresher breath, a better smelling coat and less shedding on the carpet and furniture. Most large pet stores now offer grooming services right in the store and employ different groomers, who all specialize in different dogs and breed specific haircuts or one tailored to your specifications.

Most groomers will require that your dog be dropped off for the day for a full service grooming. A full service grooming service usually includes a bath with medicated shampoo and a deep conditioning treatment. The dogs are dried by hand or placed in a drying cage which acts as a giant blow dryer. In addition to a haircut, your dogs toenails will be clipped, ears cleaned and sometimes teeth brushed (if the dog will allow it). Extra amenities are available upon request and for an additional fee such as toenail polish, perfume or ribbons for the true doggie diva.

In between professional groomings, there are steps you should take to maintain the overall appearance and comfort of your dog. Brush your dog weekly to remove dead hair and reduce shedding. There are also different varieties of “dry shampoo” which gets lightly spritzed on after weekly brushing to promote shine and reduce odor. If she will allow it, brush her teeth using canine toothpaste available at pet stores. If she will not tolerate brushing, there are drops which can be added to her drinking water to maintain dental health and freshen breath. Always look for dog grooming products which contain natural ingredients to reduce the possibility of irritation or excessive drying of the skin.
