Dog Collars
A dog collar is one of those essentials which a dog owner cannot be
without. A dog collar allows a leash to be put on easily before going outdoors and provides a place for identification and vaccination tags to be hung. However, dog collars are designed to do much more than just serve these basic functions and come in a wide variety of colors and styles to make the possibilities almost endless. A pet owner may have a few different collars specifically for different uses.
Dogs need an everyday collar to serve just to serve basic functions. Most dog collars are constructed from nylon or hemp due to their durability, strength and longevity. The colors and patterns available are endless and one to compliment your dog's coat and color should not be hard to find. Nylon collars are usually adjustable and can accommodate a growing puppy up to an extra inch. Collars are measured in inches of the dog's neck and should fit snugly enough to not pull over the dog's head, but loosely enough to allow for comfort and of course, unrestricted breathing. Most major pet stores allow you to bring your dog in with you and it is probably best to have them there to determine you are purchasing the perfect size collar.
Another type of collar which may be needed for a dog is a training collar which creates resistant when pulled against, forcing the dog to stop. These types of training collars are generally suitable for large breeds and should also be used with caution and compassion. Different types of training collars are available and an experienced trainer should be able to advise you on the best one for your needs.
A new design in training collars are those which work under the principle of opposite resistance and put pressure on the back of the dog's neck rather than on the throat. These types of training collars are designed to help you train your dog to not pull ahead during walks and will set a perfect pace for a relaxing walk.
And for those big, lovable dogs who feel the need to warn the family of every passing jogger, or the terrier who yaps at every blowing leaf; there are anti bark collars available. These collars contain transmitters which emit an unpleasant tone audible only to the dog upon the sound of barking. This humane correction technique will allow you to let your dog out into the yard without waking up the neighborhood.
