Dog Carrier

When choosing a carrier for your small dog there are certain factors to consider to ensure that you are choosing the perfect carrier for both you and your dog. By choosing a portable crate or small carrier that can be used in a variety of different functions, you will be saving time and money down the road and freeing up space in your ever-expanding pet supply closet.

First and foremost you need to consider the different uses your dog will have for her crate. For some pet owners this is simple, the dog carrier will solely be used for short car trips to the vet or groomers and only needs to serve the very basic function of safely confining your dog during short travel. In this instance, a hard shelled carrier appropriate to your dog’s size may suit your needs quite fine. The size should allow for movement of the dog and the ability to turn herself around comfortably, but not much more. This allows for constriction of movement in case of an accident and does not take up unnecessary space for something in which your dog will not spend very much time.

However, if you like to include your dog on more family functions, leave your dog with a sitter while you travel or enjoy outdoor activities with your dog; you may want to consider portable crates which feature added amenities to allow for different uses. For example, many portable crates are now constructed out of waterproof, cleanable nylon and have screened in windows to allow for ventilation. This would be the perfect travel crate to bring along if taking your dog camping. Not only will it provide safe confinement while on the trip, it will provide her with her own sleeping quarters within the tent and relief from bugs while spending time out near the campfire at night.

Many smaller dogs enjoy the sense of security of enclosed spaces and curling up in their own comfortable bed may allow them to sleep more peacefully under new circumstances. These nylon crates are also usually collapsible and allow for easy storage at home.

If choosing a carrier which will double as a crate while on visits or camping, allow your dog additional room to move freely and sleep more comfortably. Also, be sure to leave room for some stuffed toys and a nice warm blanket!
