Dog SearchIf the dog search is on you have to decide whether you are interested in obtaining a purebred dog or a mixed breed. Each type comes with its own set of advantages but many people are quick to cast aside the thought of a mixed breed dog (often referred to as a mongrel or the newer name, a “Heinz 57”) in favor of a purebred. But before you begin your dog search with the over 150 officially listed “canine blue-bloods” or the royalty among the dog set, take the advantages of both into consideration. If your dog search is a very specific well defined search for an animal with a particular purpose in mind such as herding, hunting, showing, scent work, etc. then perhaps a purebred is best for you. Certain breeds of dogs have been trained from birth to perform specific tasks and through many years of selective breeding the traits unique to these dogs have become refined and strengthened to the point of almost near perfection. Some people consider their own health and or health considerations when conducting a dog search. To use an example, some people suffer from respiratory conditions such as asthma or terrible allergies and are cautioned to steer clear of dogs that shed their hair a great deal. Some breeds of dogs, such as a variety of Poodles and Schnauzers shed but much less than other breeds and would be a more appropriate choice for a person with these kinds of health concerns. If you do suffer from health problems of this sort than a purebred would be a much better choice for you. To what degree a mixed breed dog will shed is much more difficult to predict, if not entirely impossible. Your dog search however might lead you in an entirely different direction. Some people simply like the physical characteristics of one dog breed over another while there are certain breeds that are known to have particular personality traits and behavioral patterns. Your dog search might lead you to conclude that you want a dog that is a lot like yourself in its personality. For example, people who are easygoing and have laidback, calm personalities often favor Golden Retrievers as these lovely dogs are very similar in their dispositions. Cost is a big issue with a lot of people and this is one area where mixed breeds come out ahead of purebreds every time. Depending on the breed, a purebred dog can cost anywhere from $300- $3000 and sometimes more whereas many mixed breed dogs are free to a good home or can be purchased for a very small adoption fee. Whichever way your dog search takes you, just remember that all dogs, whether they be purebred or mixed breed, are precious and worthy of love. |
