Dog Health

There are certain facets of dog health that mirror that of human health. People need to eat as healthy as possible and get plenty of exercise and so do dogs. Preventative medicine and healthy living help ward off sickness in dogs and aid in encouraging a longer life span. These good habits of dog health are easily identifiable but some are less obvious.

Trips to the vet are a necessity and so are vet bills. Proper dog health means making sure your dog gets all the necessary shots, is spayed or neutered and has regular check ups as required. Diseases and/or other ailments that are detected early can often be treated and in many cases, cured. Pets age and sometimes in their senior years they need special attention. Also accidents happen to dogs on occasion, just like their human counterparts. Emergency visits, often at unusual hours can incur higher costs. If you are worried about not being able to afford the potential vet visits start saving early or consider investing in pet insurance.

Dogs love routine and are the least stressed when they know what to expect, day after day. A part of dog health is knowing that your dog is secure and as happy as can be. Remember that mental well-being is as important as physical well being. If you live a disorganized, chaotic kind of life consider changing it to reflect predictability- your dog’s health will thank you. Dogs enjoy reliability and they like knowing that they will be fed at approximately the same time every day and they like knowing when they will be taken for their walk. They especially enjoy getting to know the timetable of their owner (in other words when he/she will return home). An occasional shift in routine is manageable but predictability is the key to a happier and more well adjusted dog.

Dog health has a great deal to do with what they put in their mouths, and it’s often everything they can get a hold of! A subsection of dog health is keeping your dog safe and free from harm. Remember that many household hazards abound. Electrical cords and telephone cords interest dogs, as they often want to chew on them. Encourage your dog to play with safe toys designed specifically for dogs. When old toys get boring find new ones to entertain your canine.

Speaking of mouths, dog health is tied in closely with the all-important eating habits. It is standard for most people to feed their dog in the morning before they leave for work but that is not necessarily what is best. Studies on dog health have found that what is best is to feed a dog two smaller meals a day, preferably one in the morning and one when you return home in the evening. On two smaller, separate meals a dog will not have as full a stomach and will be able to exercise and play much easier. Dog health concerns start when they are young. Puppies need more food than adult dogs. Feed your little one three or four times a day, as he/she needs twice as much food to develop into a healthy adult dog.
