Dog Doors

Dog doors serve to allow your pet access to the outdoors when you can’t take him out. These doors can go just about anywhere, including in screen doors, sliding glass doors and in walls. An advantage to a wall dog door is that nobody needs to know that you have a dog, much less a place for the dog to get out (and a robber potentially get in.) The only issue facing the dog owner who is contemplating putting a dog door in is permanence. Dog doors are in forever and, once in, cannot restore the door completely once it is taken out. For most people, however, this is not a problem, as they either plan on staying in the house with their animal for some time to come, or have found a way around the requirements of their renting office.

When installing dog doors, it is important to consider the current size of your dog and the possible future size of your dog; after all, you expect your pet to be around forever. It is recommended that there is at least a one to two inch leeway between the top of the dog’s shoulder and the top of the door. Also, drafts can become an issue when the weather outside is cold or windy. Heating costs can be drastically reduced if the door is insulated well. To insulate a dog door you must be able to keep the flap closed when not in use. Magnetic dog doors do especially well under these circumstances. Just as importantly, the right material can made the difference when it comes to dog doors. Injected Mold Vinyl isn’t as good at insulation as PVC vinyl.

Newer dog doors can be electronic, able to control which animal gets out and which stays in (such as keeping the cat in but allowing the dog out by using a door activation sensor which is attached to the dog’s collar). With this setup it is possible to avoid the fear of allowing animals in which don’t belong, as well, since only the chosen animal can activate the collar.
