Dog Breeds

Making the decision to get a dog is a very important one and deciding on what breed of dog you are interested in is another decision not to be taken lightly. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) there are approximately 150 dog breeds, each having their own unique characteristics. As well there is a multitude of mixed breeds, every one of them being available in different sizes, shapes and having their own inherent personality traits.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the dog breeds that are out there to choose from alphabetically from A to Y (interestingly enough, there are no dog breeds that start with the letter Z). Under the A to C categories of dog breeds there are many varieties from small to large. Examples of these include the American Bulldog, the American Foxhound, the Afghan Hound, the Basset Hound, the Beagle, the Belgian Sheepdog, the Bloodhound, the Border Collie, the Boxer, the Bull Terrier, the Chihuahua, the Chow Chow and the Cocker Spaniel. Letters D through F boast such breeds as the Dachshund, the Dalmatian, the Doberman Pinscher, the English Foxhound, the English Setter, the Finnish Spitz, and the French Bulldog.

But there are so many other dog breeds throughout the alphabet to consider. In the G to I category there is the German Shepherd, the Golden Retriever, the Great Dane, the Greyhound, the Harrier, the Ibizan Hound, the Irish Terrier and the Irish Wolfhound. Moving right along, the J category boasts the Jack Russell Terrier while K and L give rise to the Kerry Blue Terrier, the Komondor, the Labrador Retriever and the Lhasa Apso.

Are you still having trouble deciding on a dog breed? Let us continue then to make our way through the alphabet. Letters M through O include such breeds as the Maltese, the Manchester Terrier, the Mareema Sheepdog, the Miniature Poodle, the Norfolk Terrier, the Norwegian Elkhound, the Old English Sheepdog and the Otterhound. Letters P through S (noting that there are no dog breeds that start with the letter Q) are plentiful. Some of these breeds include the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the Pekingese, the Pomeranian, the Pug, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, the Rottweiler, the Saint Bernard, the Samoyed and the Siberian Husky.

Finally we reach the last few letters of the alphabet and look at the T to W dog breeds, which include the Tibetan Spaniel and Tibetan Terrier, the Toy Poodle, the Vizsla, the Welsh Terrier and the Whippet. Last but not least we consider the letters X and Y which contain only one breed each, for X it is the Xoloitzcuintli and for Y, the Yorkshire Terrier.

There are ten dog breeds that have the honor as standing out as the top ones. These ten breeds include the Bulldog, Chihuahua, Golden Retriever, Maltese, Poodle, Pomeranian, Pug, Rottweiler, Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier.
