Dog BreedersDog breeders are those who carefully mate selected members of the same breed of dog in order for them to reproduce puppies who have the same kinds of physical traits as well as personality characteristics and qualities. By definition even if you do this only one time with one litter of dog you are considered a dog breeder. Having a true love of dogs and having their best interests at heart are both important facets of being a responsible dog breeder. As well, ethical dog breeders treat their animals well and make sure they live in the best circumstances possible, including providing proper housing, adequate food and water, medical check ups and medical attention when needed, lots of tender loving care and plenty of exercise. All individuals wanting to know what responsible dog breeders are and how they are supposed to conduct themselves should take the time to peruse the various breed clubs that exist for the dog of choice and carefully read their code of ethics. It is important to never lose sight of the fact that how much responsible, ethical dog breeders love their individual dogs as well as the breed as a whole is reflected in how they take steps to benefit, protect and provide comfort to the animal(s). A few key points as to what to look for in a responsible dog breeder are below. Responsible dog breeders think of their dogs as members of the family, not simply as animals to raise for profit. As well they do everything in their power to ensure that the dogs they raise go to good homes with responsible owners who will love them and take good care of them and that they will not end up abandoned, neglected, or in a homeless shelter or a dog rescue. Many dogs that come from irresponsible dog breeders end up in a sad state, not ones from responsible individuals. Responsible dog breeders carefully interview prospective customers, check references and make a concentrated effort to find appropriate matches for their dogs. They also are completely honest and forthright about the health and personality/behavioral traits of their dogs. If one of their dogs has a bad heart they say so, if one of their dogs is temperamental, they say so. Responsible dog breeders hold themselves and their customers to the highest standards, including honesty and integrity. |
