The first time you buy a dog, you may be under the mistaken impression that you need only to go to a shelter, pet store, or private owner and make your purchase. That, in fact, is only the beginning of what you have to do. There are numerous dog accessories you will need in order to properly take care of your dog and keep him healthy. You may even want to spend time collecting the right dog accessories before you run out and pick up your dog.

First of all, think about your dog accessories in terms of necessities for your dog. What will he eat out of? What will he drink from? You will likely want to pick up some nice, unbreakable, dog dishes for him to use. Such dog accessories are semi=necessities since you may choose to use some of your own bowls, but will likely want something designed to take on your new pet’s abuses. Other semi=necessary dog accessories are things like leashes, chew toys, and even doggie beds. If you want to be able to keep your dog out of certain rooms, baby gate or dog gate just adds to the list of dog accessories.

Then there are the toys. Your dog will want to play, hopefully, and you should be able to supply him with safe toys. These dog accessories are very important in keeping your dog from tearing up your things, maintaining his healthy teeth, and keeping him feeling young.

As you can see, buying a dog is not just buying a dog. There are plenty of dog accessories that are both semi necessary and optional, but it is certainly something to think about. So before you rush out, think through the dog accessories you may need so that your transition to pet ownership is a smooth and rewarding one.
